Paralympic inspiration Jacqui Kapinowski hosts Marine Corps Marathon

TEQUESTA, Fla. (CBS12) — Tequesta’s Jacqui Kapinowski is a 9 -time Paralympic World Championship Medalist in four sports. She’s overcome cancer twice, and is still recovering from a stroke last July. But nothing can stop her mission.

Jacqui’s latest mission is this Sunday’s Marine Corp Marathon on Jupiter Island to honor our veterans and first responders, celebrating the 45th anniversary of the official Marine Corps Marathon, which was cancelled in Virginia this year because of COVID-19. It’s the first big event for Jacqui’s newly formed non-profit ‘Shifting Gears United’, and it’s an event that’s inspired 50 wounded veterans and first responders to take part.

“To see how it makes them feel (inspires me),” says Kapinowski. “They’ll receive a medal from the Marine Corp Marathon, but I personally made a medal for each and every one of them.”

The marathon and 10 K starts at 8 a.m. at Coral Cove Park, with a Beach & BBQ party after with masks required. To register for the marathon, or to make a donation, contact Jacqui at Shifting Gears United.

Pepsi Cola is sponsoring drinks and snacks for our MCM weekend and future events. The director from Pepsi Cola located in WPB is originally from Newark NJ, right by Harry’s firehouse. What a small world- I invited Pepsi Cola to attend our team dinner and Sunday.

The Moose Lodge located on Indiantown Road is loaning us their American flag, smoking up shredded pork for 100 people – they will also be volunteering Sunday.

The Film crew and athletes arrive Saturday LaQuinta – Jupiter
I’m setting up the interviews between film production and the athletes being interviewed the name of Documentary is called “Never Surrendered” Dick Traum’s story.

Things are coming together. Harry and I have been making trips to storage getting all items needed in place.

Only a month away until our virtual Marine Corps 45th anniversary Marathon.

Welcome our new athlete Orly whom is visually impaired and absolutely a beautiful soul. Thank you Dr. Andrew for being her tandem team partner, you both killed it today. Thank you James (Jimmy Crews) for driving Orly to practice. Gary one of our guides and volunteers guided Don Sirois one of our SGU super stars.
Pauly T who doesn’t miss Sunday practice came out and rode after last weeks neck surgery.

SGU Team Jersey Design Revealed

Jacqui Kapinowski, SGU President unveiled the newly designed Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans team jersey.

Presented in two main colors, each jersey features the Shifting Gears United logo on front and back, and the Victory Cycling Club logo on the back pocket. The shoulders and sleeves proudly display the American flag, and stylized stripes, each representing the individual military and first responder services whose veterans are represented by the members of SGU.
